Cannabidiol (CBD) isn't a wonder drug, but it can work wonders on a variety of skin issues ranging from psoriasis and eczema to premature signs of aging and adult acne. When applied topically, CBD affects the endocannabinoid system receptors within our skin, enabling it to have a quick and targeted effect.
CBD: The All-Powerful Antioxidant
Science has shown that CBD is a powerful antioxidant, perhaps even more powerful than both vitamins C and E. In fact, a study released in 1998 by the Proceedings of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences expressed that “cannabidiol was more protective against glutamate neurotoxicity than either ascorbate or α-tocopherol, indicating it to be a potent antioxidant.” Why is this important? Antioxidants help slow the aging process by reducing free radicals. Free radicals are unstable atoms that can damage cells, causing collagen to break down faster. By slowing down the process of collagen loss, the antioxidants in CBD help keep your skin looking more youthful.
Furthermore, The National Institute of Health (NIH) has a ‘507’ patent on CBD which includes scientific evidence proving that CBD possesses antioxidant and neuroprotective properties, both of which are essential in anti-aging treatments. The study also states that even large doses of CBD have no dangerous effects and are essentially non-toxic. This makes CBD a much safer choice in comparison to other anti-aging compounds that have very high levels of toxicity like retinol.
Managing Signs of Aging with CBD
The reason behind wrinkles explains why CBD is so effective at treating them. It turns out inflammation plays a critical role in aging. When the skin becomes irritated, certain agents are released that can cause inflammatory damage and destroy collagen. In turn, this can lead to the formation of wrinkles. By countering this inflammation, CBD helps reduce the subsequent development of wrinkles. CBD also helps with retaining moisture, while simultaneously decreasing excessive oils. As a result, the skin is healthier looking and better able to repair itself.
Fighting Acne & Skin Impurities with CBD
Acne and skin impurities are not exclusive to teenagers, they often occur in adulthood as well. Breakouts are commonly caused by an increased secretion of sebum and the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. Sebum normally plays an important role in skin protection, but when the skin produces too much of it, it can also cause unwanted acne. So, what makes CBD a great ally in the fight against acne?
1. CBD reduces the formation of sebum in sebaceous tissues Clinical studies have shown that the CBD molecule reduces the formation of sebum in the sebaceous glands, which is highly desired in acne-prone skincare, as the formation of sebum is the most common culprit of breakouts.
2. CBD has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties CBD carries out complex anti-inflammatory and antibacterial actions demonstrated also in many other experimental studies on diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. Red acne (not blackheads) are the result of inflammatory skin changes that CBD cannabinoid can successfully calm down.
