Before starting Her Royal Hempress, I worked as a "mad woman" on Madison Avenue for one of the largest and most competitive advertising agencies. Back then, I worked with a group of very talented and creative people creating commercials for a variety of drugs that you see every day on television. I had misgivings about entering the world of pharmaceutical advertising, but at the time I needed to pay rent. Little did I realize how dark and unethical the actions of those around me would quickly become.
The turning point came when I was invited into a small room full of advertising bigwigs, plus a few doctors and scientists. At first, I didn't understand why we had all gathered. It was uncommon for us to work directly with physicians. Then, much to my horror, the purpose of the brainstorming session became clear. Our goal was to invent a new disease. Let me repeat that again. We were tasked with INVENTING A DISEASE.
I'd heard tales of such scenarios where ad execs and medical professionals conspire together, but I never thought I'd be in the actual room where it was taking place. I sat quietly, stunned at what I was witnessing. It took me back to my days in grad school when a professor warned us that we'd all encounter these dark corners of the advertising industry. He challenged us to stand up for what we believe in.
When asked to weigh in on naming the different stages of the "disease," I was speechless.
Shortly after that day, I quit my job and not long after that, the entire industry. There were too many lies and false portrayals of what will improve people's lives. Now I dedicate my time and energy to spreading awareness about plant-based skincare and bodycare. Next time you reach for a prescription drug, please remember my story and ask yourself about the true intentions of the makers behind these products. There are so many better ways to find relief without the harmful side-effects.
