Can Cannabis Change the World?

Updated: 5 days ago

It already has.

From tribal shamans to Victorian housewives, people throughout the ages have utilized cannabis in many forms to alleviate pain as well as stress and anxiety. There's a good chance that no matter where your ancestors called home, they relied up this incredible plant for its medicinal properties. Cannabis is woven throughout the fabric of human history in ways we're just beginning to understand. This comes as no surprise to many long-time users. That's because the benefits of cannabis are undeniable, and even though it's been outlawed—it's never been outdone in terms of healing qualities. So, the real question is... Can cannabis change the world again?

New Era, New Possibilities

The criminalization of cannabis speaks more to mankind's disconnection with nature and the rise of unchecked capitalism than to its danger to public health. Thankfully, with the discovery of the Endocannabinoid system in the 1990s, there's been a surge of interest in the medicinal properties of cannabis as well as a dispelling of the myths surrounding it. For the first time, advocates of cannabis have science on their side to back up their medicinal claims.

Tax Revenue For The Common Good

Once federal legalization is achieved, there will be an even clearer pathway for cannabis to transform the world, but it'll take socially responsible policy makers. In Colorado, we've seen how the legalization of cannabis along with smart tax policies has created enough revenue to build new homeless shelters as well as fund scholarships for underprivileged students. Washington made the most in taxes last year with an estimated $319 million. California was close behind with $300 million while Colorado recorded the third-highest estimated tax revenue with $266 million. That is not an insignificant amount of money.

Just imagine the possibilities of what cannabis could fund—from nursing homes to public transportation—the sky is the limit.
